Features of Castings

Casting parts are capable of producing components with intricate shapes, including those with complex internal cavities, such as heating elements. This process offers wide adaptability and can be applied to a variety of commonly used industrial metals. The weight of casting parts can range from a few grams to several hundred tons. The raw materials for casting are readily available and cost-effective, including scrap steel, scrap metal, and metal chips. The shape and size of castings are often very close to the final part specifications, which significantly reduces the need for extensive machining and cutting processes.

Material Properties in Castings

  • Gray cast iron: Good mobility, small shrinkage when cooling, strength, plasticity, toughness are low, modulus of elasticity with the microstructure of different between 80000 ~ 140,000MPa change, carry pressure strength than carry tensile strength is 3 ~ 4 times higher than the vibration absorption is good. Insensitive to incision, good cutting performance. Welding performance is very poor. Can not be used for a long time above 300~400℃.

  • Malleable cast iron: Casting performance is worse than gray cast iron, better than cast steel, used for the manufacture of small thin-walled castings with requirements for strength and toughness. Better corrosion resistance, good machinability. Impact toughness than gray cast iron 3~4 times.

  • Ductile cast iron: Casting performance is worse than gray cast iron, easy to produce defects. Cutting and machining performance is good, heat treatment can make its performance in a wide range of changes. Carry tensile strength is higher than cast iron, cast steel, yield strength and carry tensile strength ratio, than malleable cast iron and steel. Plasticity is good in cast iron, impact toughness can not be compared with steel, but much larger than gray cast iron. Have good low temperature performance. Fatigue strength is high, close to 45 steel, but the sensitivity to stress concentration is lower than steel. Heat and corrosion resistance is better.
